Kids and Music

For kids under 5, I have found that learning music through an imaginative and playful world gives them the inspiration to learn and practice. Kids can learn traditional piano skills from a young age, along with general musical concepts such as pitch, rhythm, expressive techniques and musical texture. Read below for some general information about the books series I like to use for kids lessons, as well some other FAQ's.

I have a valid Working with Children check, and am a registered Creative Kids Provider so feel free to use your vouchers with me if you have them available.

Music for Little Mozarts - ages 3-6

For students aged 3-6, I have had lots of success using the Music for Little Mozarts program. Students begin their musical journey by following "Mozart Mouse" and "Beethoven Bears" adventures through the musical world of the keyboard. Students can participate in private 1-on-1 lessons or with a group of friends!

By following this program, students learn about the concepts of pitch, notes, keyboard/piano playing technique and rhythm. We learn that music can have very high and quiet sounds, like a tiny squeaky mouse, and also very low and loud sounds like a great big bear!

We learn that different notes on the keyboard can produce different pitches and create songs we know and love, such as Old Macdonald Had a Farm or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Throughout the Music for Little Mozarts program, students will learn the layout of the keyboard and be able to play some of their favourite songs using correct hand and finger technique. They also get to know about baby crotchets, mother minim's and daddy semibreves.

I also like to incorporate other fun musical activities in the lessons, such as doing the solfège stretch, using egg shakers to shake to the beat, music and movement activities, listening activities, drawing rhythms on the whiteboard and also "Schubert Says" - A musical take on Simon Says.

Frequently Asked Questions

What instrument should I get for my child?

For young kids under 5, they can learn from cheaper and smaller keyboards such as the CASIO SA-76, all the way up to full size piano's. If you're on a tighter budget, the smaller cheaper keyboards are just fine and a good way to give your child the experience of learning an instrument.

How often should my child be practicing?

Every day if possible! Otherwise, at minimum, 3 days a week for 5-10 minutes is a good start.

What should my child practice?

I will write the date on the page of their book that we get up to for the lessons so look out for the most recent date. Kids should practice their songs at least 5 times in a row each time they practice. They should make sure to look out for 3 things - correct finger position, correct notes, and correct rhythm.

I also encourage kids to explore the various sounds on their keyboard and enjoy it! It's always better if kids have a positive experience with their instrument and that will draw them to it more and more. On the other hand, if kids are getting overly frustrated for whatever reason, let them stop and do something else and come back to it later.

What should I do as a parent to encourage more practice and music study?

Kids need a reason to practice - I find that after inspiring children with new music and giving them confidence in the instrument, then they start to enjoy it more and gravitate towards their instrument. When your child is practicing, ensure you are nearby to supervise so they don't feel isolated. You can help them gain interest by discussing the pictures in the book, reading the stories in the book together and playing music at home to listen to together. The Music for Little Mozart book contains directions on each page, making it very easy for parents to follow along and guide children through step by step instructions.
